The art of the album is slowly dying. Though not overnight, the recording industry has changed drastically. This isn't news to most people. We've been downloading mp3s off of the Internet for over a decade now. People are recording songs in their bedrooms with technology that rivals what was available in professional studios not long ago.
Another Breath is a hardcore-punk band hailing from Syracuse, NY. This past December they released their new record entitled God Complex which quickly acquired praises of all kinds imaginable. After a month or so of listening to the record, and then double-backing to re-listen to Another Breath's prior releases, I'm willing to say that this record is a breakthrough not only for the band, but for hardcore-punk bands across NYS, if not the country.
Ke$ha (more formally known as Kesha Sebert)'s Animal is a snapshot of today's pop music scene. Every track is an infectious, beat-driven and frequently auto-tuned "hookfest" that gets bodies moving and opinions flaring. Her music is not for everyone, especially not in doses larger than one song at a time; the genre into which she falls is just niche enough to be associated with the disclaimer of, "if you don't like this music already, it's unlikely you will learn to in a single sitting.
Taking risk on a first record is smart because you have nothing to lose. Taking risk on the second is something to be wary of. Vampire Weekend didn't think twice about their second release. Contra is the second installment and rightfully the better of the two.
Bayonetta, Sega's latest game for the Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms, released in the U.S. on January 5, might seem like another testosterone-injected game flaunting a sexy main character, but proves to be a thrilling experience for players. Bayonetta is a game that doesn't quite fit in with my "manly" video game collection.
Let's get right to the point - Tucker Max's compilation of stories, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, is sexist and trashy. However, it also turns out to be shamefully entertaining. I sometimes like to stray from my norm in literature to put a spin on things, which, I'm ashamed to admit, I found amusing.
I've started to wonder how many different ways we can depict a post-apocalyptic world on the big screen. There are any number of probable causes ranging from virus outbreaks to natural global catastrophies to self-decimating nuclear war. All of the previous movies just seem to blur together.
The Potsdam Video Game Club (PVGC) and SES held their "Rock Out" event in Hurley's on Friday, January 29th at 7:30 p.m. Bill Kline, a mutual member of both the PVGC and SES, put the event together almost entirely. By combining elements of both clubs, they were able to create a night filled with music-based video games such as Guitar Hero 2, Rockband 2, and Dance Dance Revolution.
