Last Friday, May 1st, Dr. Youngblood's COMM106 honors class joined with various acts from the campus community to organize a public event, the On Your Feet performance. At the performance they received 865$ in donations from the audience. Justin Moniz, Roland Poirier, & Lilly McAvoy presented three well-built speeches that focused on free, on & off-campus S.T.I. testing; the Canton, NY chapter of C.A.V.A.'s support for those who've been sexually abused and the You Feed Them project's aid in working to eliminate famine in Kenya. The crowd was given the honor of selecting who of the three charitable topics discussed would receive the donations collected. The audience selected, by a majority vote, to give the donations to the You Feed Them project (www.youfeedthem.com). Roland Poirier's father, who started the organization, let the class know that the money donated would be spent to purchase food for about 4 months (two meals per day) for an orphanage of about 40 kids in Owego, Kenya.
Dr. Youngblood's COMM106 honors class would like to publicly thank all donors, especially the family of Kaitlin Brethour and Roland Poirier for their contributions to the On Your Feet performance. The class would also like to thank the Potsdam Pointercounts, the Potsdam Pitches, SUNY Potsdam's step team, Bearwitness; SUNY Potsdam's dance team, Unrated Chaos; and Micah Stratton for their enthusiastic performances on stage the night of the event, as well as for their cooperation beforehand. Another kind "thanks" goes out to all campus students, faculty and staff that made this event go smoothly. It's nice to see our community get on their feet for a worthy cause.
