A response to UP rant
Issue date: 5/8/09 Section: Opinion
Congratulations, Jared Dean. You were told to put out a fire in Marshall Park, and ever since that fateful day in your life, a new fire was ignited in you to uncover and expose the vast corruption in the University Police Department. Way to go Jared. You weren't able to roast your marshmallows, and now all of University Police is to blame.
Now your perspective is forever tainted when it comes to the performance of the University's police officers. If a police officer is doing a safety patrol of a residence hall, and he stops to interact with the student body; that's not Community Policing. No sir. To you, that is inappropriate flirting. If a police officer is enforcing the fifteen minute parking rule in front of the Student Union, he isn't trying to ensure fair use of the parking spots. No way. In the world according to Dean, that officer is staking out the Union in a colossal waste of time and money. If a police officer's cruiser is parked outside a residence, that officer is not responding to an emergency at a student's room. In the myopic perspective of Jared Dean, that officer is needlessly wasting gas and inviting joyrides to the public at large. Through your limited vision, the campus is not safer with the University Police intact. Your logic for this brilliant assumption is the fact that there are still illegal activities taking place. What a fantastic conclusion you have drawn. Doing away with the police would certainly reduce the illegal activity. Bravo, Jared.
But that's not all. You don't just point out the problem, you also offer a solution. There is no need for a self sufficient, trained police department. No. What we need is a small emergency response team. Good idea. That way, when you are attacked, or someone is attempting to break into your room, you can climb out your window and race to an emergency phone whereby an elite team of professionals will be activated to quickly respond to your personal needs. That way, this "small emergency response team" could sit dormant until needed and not be out there cramping your style---especially when you want to hold a wiener roast. Don't worry about all the insignificant crimes like identity theft, criminal mischief, harassment, and larcenies. Those don't rise to the level of importance where a police department is needed. We just need a special response team for emergencies. Those other illegal activities will continue anyway, so why have a police department?

Derek,
I would like to thank you for speaking up and expressing your thoughts and feelings on the situation.
University Police has done more for me than any other student service on this campus. (Continued…)

Derek, It seems like you have a problem with anyone who doesn't have the same view as you do. As shown on this website last week with your harsh accusations on this subject as well as Seussical, it seems like you are the biased one who can not see things from other peoples perspectives. Well, Derek, you have just proved that you are incapable of taking the high road. The OpEd section is not supossed to be a place for people to knock down other people. (Continued…)

Well, Derek, congratulations on making yourself seem like a bigger idiot than everyone thought. This section of the paper is not supossed to be used as a soapbox to target other students who, surprise, may not share your same views. (Continued…)

I am leaning towards Jared's opinion, the UP seems excessive on this campus or at least they have too much time on their hands. I understand we need a constant presence of the UP on campus but there are too many of them for their level of responsibility, that there is nothing for them to do other than give out pointless tickets. Congratulations, Derek Pooley!
Your love affair with UP has won you the opportunity to be tried in a civil libel suit because all the personal attacks you have lain on Jared's character! Not only are you eligible to be tried in civil proceedings for defamation of character but you have done it in three of the four possible ways! Well done, sir, well done. (Continued…)

Ohh Derek Pooley, once an ass kisser, always an ass kisser. Your condescending remarks towards Jared Dean warrant such applause and admiration. Maybe if you would have done your research I think you'd find that Jared wasn't worried about wiener roasting or marshmallows (hint: vegans don't eat those). (Continued…)

Well! What a list of statements, that really mean nothing because people aren't ballsy enough to out their names. All of you argue against UP. But yet, none of you supported Jared with an article this week. (Continued…)

Looking back, Derek, I find that your philosophy on matters ado with opinion is... totally screwed up.
Weren't you the one advocating for the censorship of the Racquette because of Jared's rant? And the Seussical review? Weren't those published articles merely their opinions, as well?
Let's give you a mirror to look into:
if u dont lik there opinion DON'T READ IT!!!!!!!

OMG! UP has helped me and a lot of people I know a ton of times. I don't blame the whole departmant because of one or two jerks. What if UP did the same thing and blamed all students for something just a few did. (Continued…)
