Kailin Garrity performed acoustic music in Hurley's last thursday

New York City's Kailin Garrity journeyed seven hours to Potsdam where she was the Featured Artist at Hurley's Night Club on Thursday, October 22. What was perhaps an unfamiliar face to most of the audience put a handful of new songs on many people's iPods. With the sole accompaniment of her acoustic Gibson guitar, the combination of Kailin's potent voice and exceptional songwriting was captivating at first listen. Her performance was anything but generic; her composure and enthusiasm in a locale where few knew her name was admirable.

Many of Kailin's lyrics were clever and unforgettable, like, "my bed's too small and you just take up space," which floated around in my head for the longest time. When encouraging the crowd to sing along in one of her incredible original songs "Let It Be Beautiful," she said "I was once told that if you can speak, you can sing." The hook for that song rang in my head all night.

Kailin did the Rolling Stones justice in her charming rendition of the popular tune "You Can't Always Get What You Want," as well as flaunted her newfound harmonica skills. Her cover of "Landslide" was no less impressive. With her unique voice and style, this indie/folk singer-songwriter turned each cover song into her own.

It was no surprise that many did not leave Hurley's before buying her five-song Be Free EP. What was a surprise, however, was when Kailin stayed to watch the open mic that followed her set. Not only that, but she conversed with anyone who wanted to talk after her performance, including myself-stranger turned acquaintance by the end of the night!
