The price tag that was put on their plan is estimated to be over one trillion dollars over a period of ten years. In response, President Obama has said that this is "…less than we have spent on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars during the Bush Administration."
After the bill was initiated or implemented, it went to the House of Representatives for approval.
Obama is not the first US president to propose a plan for the reformation of health care. Over the past 75 years, Democratic presidents including Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman have been trying to include some kind of Health Care Reform plan in their administration.
The subject of universal health care in the United States has become a heated topic over the past year. Many students at SUNY Potsdam agree that there needs to be a Health Care Reform in the United States, but do not necessarily agree with the current health care bill's points and objectives.
Katy Hunt, senior psychology major, stated, "I dislike the healthcare reform bill. I feel that it will hurt more people than it was made to help. It will decrease the quality of the healthcare we already have in this country. There would also a big pay loss to doctors. Why do people go to medical school? Of course, obvious answer, they get to help people; but let's face it, they're doing it for the money too."
Hunt ended her statement with a great rhetorical question that fits, "How about instead of overhauling the entire healthcare system, we just help the population and give them insurance?"
Renee Ethier, senior psychology major stated, "I think that we need to see some sort of reform on health care because what we currently have in the US doesn't work very well. However I am not a fan of the bill that is currently being proposed and passed in congress. It is my understanding that your coverage will be based on your age and your health problems. This brings many concerns to my mind as the spouse of a middle aged man with serious health complications. We have heard that instead of health coverage for the sick and the elderly, they will receive death counseling instead of treatment."
