How to start an SGA-affiliated organization

SUNY Potsdam is rife with opportunities for self-discovery and extracurricular involvement. Student Government Association (SGA)-affiliated groups on campus number in the dozens, and are a fantastic way to get involved with groups to explore new hobbies and skills which not only are fun, but beneficial to one's skills set and resume.
However, if you find that your interests do not lie with an already existing group, you may have the option of creating your own SGA organization. The process is a simple two-part endeavor: find enough individuals with similar interests, and apply for recognition from SGA. The application form is available on the Potsdam website at http://www.potsdam.edu/studentlife/clubs/startaclub.cfm.
Individuals interested in starting a new group are able to reserve a room in the Barrington Student Union to hold an interest meeting, and once recognized by SGA, the club can reserve a room to hold regular meetings. Additionally, new groups can apply for a portion of the funding SGA allots to all new groups, and after establishing permanence, can apply to be a budgeted organization. The most important thing a group can do when applying for recognition is to display relevance: show why the members would benefit from having their organization recognized by SGA. By bringing together like-minded people, you can create a group with a potential that exceeds that of its members and brings new opportunities to students throughout the campus.
