If you are anything like me, as I like to imagine you all are for my own purposes, you are something of a daydreamer. Occasionally you succumb to the will of your imagination and put down some form of literary art on paper, or a computer. Of course, none of this ever finds its way into the public because, naturally, you know it's a serious piece of crap which should not be aired, for fear of how much stink it may produce in a public setting, right? Wrong, my friend. That little poem, or story, or non-fiction something is more than just a piece of crap, it is an artistic expression of yourself in a state of inspiration. You wrote it down because, let's face it, you wanted to immortalize the concept. That means there is something in there that is original, and it should be shared with the world.

So here's the deal. You dust off that old story, or poem, or written what-have-you, and bring it along with you to the Union's Fireside Lounge at 6 p.m., this Sunday, 28. ECSO is hosting a creative writing open mic, and we want you to feel bold enough to grace us all with your work of art. This is not a contest, so there will be no judgment. Don't expect harsh criticism, though I'm sure it can be provided upon request.

Reading in public not your bag? Fear not, good reader, you have another medium through which you can express that little spark you've produced. The North Country Literary Magazine and ECSO are hosting a creative writing contest. The two winners selected will receive guaranteed publication in the North Country Literary Magazine, a $25 gift card from the Birch Bark bookstore and a journal. The submission deadline is March 4 for the contest. Entries can be emailed to ecso@potsdam.edu.

In the interest of cross-organizational good feelings, I should add that the second call submission cut off for the NCLM is Monday, March 1, 2010. According to inside sources, the volume submitted is enough; they probably will not need a third call. They want drawings, photography and other media as well for their pages, so do not discriminate because writing isn't your bag.

Just remember, there is no such thing as bad writing in a world where C students can be president.
