Ado about commentary
The Racquette changes its commenting policy

Issue date: 2/26/10 Section: Opinion
Pardon my relatively unprofessional method of getting my point across with this article, but, frankly, enough is enough.
The Racquette will not tolerate persistent, personal harassment on the website. Every writer puts forth effort in every piece of writing that comes through our office door, and while it isn't always worthy of a Pulitzer, it's still solid student writing.
Comments like, "It physically hurts me to read this article," and "get this girl some writing lessons" are petty and unhelpful.
When comments stop being about the content and become personally insulting, your commentary will be monitored.
Why? That's an easy one. This is a student newspaper. Our contributors are students who aren't paid and are working hard to bring you the news in a format that no one on this staff can consider their solitary field of expertise.
I would hazard a guess and assume that our harassers are not experts in the field of journalism, either, so I'm not exactly hard-pressed by my decision to reintroduce comment monitoring.
I won't censor constructive criticism, and if an article is critiqued harshly from time-to-time, so be it, but the continual harassment is stopping. Now.
